A
word about:
Organic
Over
the past 10 years organics have moved beyond health food stores to become
a concern of mainstream North Americans. Organic farming involves a method
of farming that eliminates the use of harmful chemicals that are found
in herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers and maintains and replenishes
the soil’s fertility and productivity. Methods used in organic farming
are modern and highly advanced and farmers must comply with strict industry
standards to obtain organic certification.
We
have taken great care to select food and skin care items that are made
with organically grown ingredients. This ensures that the resulting product
is of the highest quality. Organic products are also gmo-free. The choice
of organic cotton for clothing and towels also provides significant health
and environmental benefits. Conventional cotton is the second most pesticide
laden crop in the world. It ranks second after coffee and before tobacco.
It is estimated that approximately 1/3 of a pound of chemicals is used
to grow enough cotton to make one t-shirt.
Genetically modified organisms (GMO)
There
a growing concern worldwide about the safety of food crops that are developed
through genetic engineering. The concerns deal not only with the genetic
manipulation which has unknown consequences for the health of humans and
other life forms, but also the fact that large corporations are pushing
the genetic modification of food for quick profit. Despite the lack of
research on long term effects, government’s are allowing genetically
modified and irradiated foods on grocery shelves without labeling. Although
non-organic crops can be gmo-free, eating organic foods is currently the
only way to ensure you are not consuming genetically modified ingredients
or irradiated foods.
Fair
trade
Fair
trade is an alternative system that is based on respect for worker’s
rights and the environment and therefore enables producers/workers, distributors
and consumers to live with dignity. Fair trade principles also protect
children from abusive child labor practices. A fair trade system can help
reverse the environmental harm and growing inequities that have marked
the growth of global trade.
Recycled materials / Renewable resources
Recycling
has and continues to be a key issue to those concerned with the impact
landfill sites are having on our environment. Recent advances in recycling
technology has increased the options available for using recycled materials.
The result is the creation of products comparable if not superior in their
quality and beauty to those made with non-recycled materials. Such items
include stemware, writing instruments, and stationary products. Fore recycling
to be successful, the importance of closing the loop needs to be considered.
This involves purchasing products with recycled content which in turn
creates a market for these materials.
Using
renewable resources also aids in environmental preservation by providing
economic alternatives to exploiting non-renewable resources as has happened
with rainforests. Examples of renewable resources include tagua nuts often
used as a substitute for ivory, as well as various leaves and grasses
such as palm leaves, and seagrass. We will only consider items made with
wood if the lumber originates from the forest industry’s discarded
materials or from a forest that abides by sustainable forestry practices.
